Quotation Marks

One use of quotation marks, in particular, can cause confusion for the reader, and that’s quotation marks over multiple paragraphs. I use this technique a number of times in my book. The rule for quotation marks in this instance is to place a quotation mark at the beginning of the paragraph only, and the end of the last paragraph. For example:

“Michael,” Katherine said, “get onto your horse.

“Do you need help Chris?”

It’s not something you run across often but will find in Brothers, Bullies and Bad Guys, because I sometimes break up dialogue for dramatic effect or when the character changes the subject.
