Christopher

Chris is almost fourteen years old. He is a dreamer and though his dreams never materialize he refuses to lose hope in them. If you could see Chris’ dark brown eyes from under his facade of hair you’d shudder, because they are haunting and filled with regret. His perfect parents use him as a babysitter; his safe and comfortable home scares the hell out of him; his friends don’t exist; his enemies track him down and beat him up; the little brother he always wanted is a secretive conniving bully. Chris is friendly in a puppy-dog way with a great deal of empathy and too much trust in those around him.

Michael

Michael is twelve years old. His shaggy blond hair, dimples, and striking green eyes give him a comical appearance, a perfect cover for the messed up kid inside. Michael doesn’t care about anyone or anything and only seems happy when torturing his older brother with mean tricks or beating up little kids. He’s a failure at school and with his parents always at work he wanders the neighbourhood until midnight with his gang of thugs. Or is this all a front? What if Michael was a computer hacker? An electronics whiz? A genious? What if he could ‘see’ things others couldn’t?

Katherine

Katherine is fourteen years old. With flaming red hair and icy blue eyes she’s stubborn, brilliant, hard working, empathatic, and extremely protective of her little brother, Thomas. She’s an honours student and loves track-and-field, unbeaten in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints. Her life is planned and everything is going to plan until she meets Chris, and he messes everything up. Katherine is challenged in the second book, and has to dig deep if she’s to survive.

Thomas

Thomas is eleven years old. He is small and fine featured with mousy brown hair and grey eyes. He loves baseball caps and always has one turned backwards on his head. Thomas is happy, friendly, and funny by nature but if you look real close you’ll detect scars of abuse. Michael and his gang frequently hunt him down and beat him up, and he cowers under trees and bushes trying to get home untouched every day after school. Thomas loves to play badminton and wishes his mom could afford to buy him a nice racket. He loves to read and finds that books are his only real means of escape. Thomas becomes a different person in the last book. Was he always a warrior and a leader or did he morph into someone new?
